Psssst hey girl, know what’s even better than vintage clothes? Vintage lingerie. There are so many more pieces to play with than what we wear today, and they’re all gorgeous. My love of vintage lingerie is no secret, especially vintage robes and dressing gowns. I love them for purely my own enjoyment of extra-ness and frills.
I used to post helpful information about vintage lingerie and shapewear on Instagram and it really offended some people I knew in real life, but not because they thought talking about lingerie was unseemly. It was because women have been “liberated” from wearing bras and underwear and how dare I support the compression and suppression of women by means of elastic, boning, and nylon! It was such an absurd reaction, I stopped talking about it totally for a few years, not because these thieves of joy convinced me of their point but because I realized their brains were too small to see beyond their own nihilism. I kept talking about vintage and vintage inspired lingerie with friends who would get it. If you don’t like beautiful things, that’s on you, but what a goofy attitude to have toward women who love beautiful and frilly things!
Anyway, here are my favorite places to find vintage boudoir robes. To be honest, I can’t tell you I wear the robes in my collection every day. I usually reserve my robes for cold mornings, evenings after I have vacuumed (don’t want dust or crumbs to catch on the train), or when I’m getting ready on a leisurely morning. Every link below is something I own or would recommend and I am not getting anything for posting about it:
Catherine D Lish is the queen of Old Hollywood robes. Every modern celebrity or meme you’ve seen with these robes were made by her. I promise! A lot of Etsy and Amazon listings steal her photos for their subpar products, so beware!
Vintage repro companies (Pinup Girl Clothing, Miss Candyfloss) often produce house dresses or robes like this, but I’d stay away from Unique Vintage. They massively upcharge for Amazon knockoff quality.
Amoralle if budget isn’t a concern, and pick one up for me too while you’re at it! 😜 Their luxury loungewear is meant to be worn at your opulent estate.
Etsy for true vintage robes. Look for names like Olga Bridal, Lucie Ann, and Vanity Fair. Key words are “peignoir set” or “vintage nightgown.”
Make one yourself! There are tons of vintage patterns available on Etsy, or you can convert a wrap dress pattern if it has enough of a sweep in the skirt. Here’s a free one from Mood Fabrics.
Happy Shopping!
Love,
Tatyana
